Little Fish

Little Fish is a band that gets closer to the the fans, the root of the story and of the song, as comfortable playing house parties as they are the Royal Albert Hall.

Little Fish interview on The P.i.X Blog

So @thepixzine wrote a great review of one of our gigs with Hole, and we got chatting on Twitter and they said they wanted to do an interview with us and we did:

    How’s it going?

It’s going pretty fucking well thanks. We just came off touring from Hole and have just written a new song about how it’s the devil makes us play.

How’s the Hole tour been for you?

Glad eyes up. Sad eyes down. Our eyes have been wide open and up. Touring with Hole has coloured our dreams; its been immensely fun and seriously cool – we’ve had a great response from the crowds and had lots of fun partying with the band, really great guys and gal.

There’s more where that came from and it’s on the P.i.X Blog now.

Next up we have Little Fish, who were last seen on this stage supporting the almighty Alice In Chains back in December. Little Fish fair a little better in front of a larger crowd who are more or less welcoming. The band ploughs through an inspired and eclectic set that shows great signs of development and maturity that more than justifies the gathering hype the band has been collecting since their breakout set at Southsea’s inaugural Southsea Fest back in 2007. Another triumphant performance from another promising band.

However, before talking about the main event (it always is an event when Courtney is in town), special mention has to be given to support band Little Fish. It’s not often that support bands make a great impression, but this 3 piece band from Oxford certainly do just that. It’s no wonder Debbie Harry has been making noises about them when they possess ferocious songs such as set highlight Whiplash. Their 30-minute set flies by as lead singer Julia Sophie commands the stage with such ease like a younger PJ Harvey or Patti Smith.

On guitar and vocals is Julia Sophie or Juju as some may know her, she enchants the crowd from the first moment she breaks the still air and once in her grip she never lets them go. Her small frame is so elusive as to what impact she can deliver, she has a set of lungs on her and when she lets rip you can feel her scream rattling your ribcage. Neil Greenaway provides the rhythms to Little Fish and is the perfect accompaniment to the brash guitar tones with his altering tempo’s and styles. The Little Fish concoction is made further mesmerising with Julia’s visceral and explosive lyrics that leave me astounded and hungry for an album sleeve, from what I could make out and further research on Myspace the lady is staggering with a pen. They literally stomp through an amazing set and although the song titles elude me, other then their final song, the feeling that fills me is that this is a band to watch out for. While standing back for a second I get the sense of a Tom Petty feel, the same Tom Petty feel that I get from Hole from time to time and with that said, Little Fish’s tone is the perfect warm up for Hole.

I have never got 2 piece bands (White Stripes not included) but backed up by an organist, these guys were incredible. Julia, aka Juju, screamed so loud that my ears curled up inside themselves. They had everything that a headliner band should have. They were captivating, loud and very energetic. They’re mesmerizing, with raucous guitar, and stomping drums. With last song, and new single ‘Am I Crazy?’, Juju broke a string and ended their set by unwinding the broken string which was the best thing I had even witnessed. Open mouthed and everything. This band are truly amazing. Think Patti Smith, meets PJ Harvey meets Alison Mosshart. Awesome. Check them out.

Thanks to Michael Fox for taking the photos.

Debbie Harry was hanging out in the VIP gallery to watch the Hole gig, and Juju caught up with her after the show. She said she really enjoyed the Little Fish set. Legend. :)

Hole looked even more lackluster after an opening set by Little Fish, a three-piece band from Oxford, England, that is about to release an album on Ms. Perry’s label, Custard. Julia Sophie, its singer and guitarist, seizes the incantatory tone of Patti Smith, P. J. Harvey and Siouxsie Sioux. Her thick, quivering voice rode three-chord rock songs that accelerated as she wailed about desire and power, and sent her striding and skittering around the stage.

Little Fish’s one slow tune, with sparse, sustained organ behind a plaintive “I lost my way,” was equally arresting. Little Fish had the raw rock spark that doesn’t depend on fame.
