Little Fish

Little Fish is a band that gets closer to the the fans, the root of the story and of the song, as comfortable playing house parties as they are the Royal Albert Hall.

On this evidence, album number two should be a treat.

Not sure when this was posted, but it’s nice.

A nice little moment in the middle of this month’s Nightshift (PDF):

With Truck Store hosting their own Not Closing Down party further along Cowley Road, we manage to sneak out to see LITTLE FISH, now a duo after the departure of drummer Nez. Juju and Ben are typically epic and intimate in the manner only the special few are capable of and they provide us with today’s golden moment in the form of ‘Only A Game’, a song so vast in its reach and hook-laden ambition, it could eat the world.

    Some reviews of Wonderful

I just spotted some great little reviews of Wonderful dotted around the internet. Jake at Leeds Music Scene gave it 4 stars, saying:

‘Wonderful’ soars like some great mythological bird, hitting heights that feel at times, especially in the decibel-shattering climax, a million miles above Earth.

David at Collected sounds wrote the most bizarrely punctuated review I’ve ever seen (also 4/5), containing this gem:

Juju’s vocals flit from theatrical to delving, as openness towards significant others is well and truly extolled.

Ian gave Wonderful a short write-up in The Music Fix’s Singles of the Week, and wins a prize for being the first reviewer to make the obvious title-related comment:

Never has a song title ever seemed so appropriate.

It’s always great when someone finds a new way to describe Juju’s voice, and I think Katie from Popped Culture hits the nail on the head in her awesome review when she talks about:

    Juju’s raspy warble

Lorenzo from AAA Music is sad to see Nez go, but rates Wonderful as:

    Honest, impetuous and, incredibly good.

After getting up at 6am to get a bus across town and sign for a delivery which still hasn’t turned up at 8am, these cheered me up a bit. Nice to know someone’s listening. ;)

Little Fish‘s debut album ‘Baffled and Beat’ was unquestionably brilliant, but there was a palpable feeling of tension running through it - it felt like a record born of adversity, which later turned out to be pretty much the case. The band have now started again from first principles with an indie label, and it shows; ‘Wonderful’ feels like a joyous release from the restraints of the past - it‘s intimate and warm, yet packs a sunburst chorus stomped out with a passion that makes your heart want to burst. Even though the lyrics suggest a hidden darkness, the translation is one of bruised defiance, of a desire to stand and fight rather than admit defeat. The uplifting combo of chiming guitars and breezy hammond organ fires you up so that the beautifully understated yet insistent rhythm can drive it headlong into your affections. Single of the month, and a superb sign of things to come.

Little Fish's Wonderful in Nightshift →

What a great review from our favourite local music rag:

Watching Little Fish play at Cornbury Festival, it was striking just how much more rich and powerful singer Julia Sophie’s voice was than any of the far more experienced blues singers on show over the weekend.

She’s always been a singer of extraordinary talent of course but since working with Linda Perry she’s discovered even greater depths of vocal strength and flexibility and that shows on this new single, one that finds Little Fish sounding far more like a three-piece than a year or so ago when Hammond player Ben Walker felt a little like a tagged-on extra to Julia and Nez’s unfettered garage rock. In fact, having watched Ju and Ben’s set as a duo at Truck, you wonder if this isn’t a direction they’re heading more towards.

On ‘Wonderful’, the organ swirls and howls around the melody sumptuously, lifting Julia’s voice higher than before, the song feeling awash with a sense of jubilation where previously Little Fish have mined a darker lyrical seam – ‘Wonderful’ feels like a ‘Sunday Morning’ to ‘Darling Dear”s ‘Heroin’.

You sense this marks entry into a more mainstream musical world but not at the expense of the band’s heart and soul, which still shine bright as ever. And catch the excellent animated video for the single if you can; it’s a fantastic slice of psychedelic whimsy, reminiscent of Mew’s Jonas Bjerre or Wladyslaw Starewicz’s early-80s work.

    A great Truck review

I hope you’ll forgive a bit of own-trumpet-blowing, but we spotted this review of our acoustic sets at Truck over on music-news.com and we’re quite chuffed with them, especially since we had some serious technical woes. Here’s Saturday:

When I finally get to the Cabaret tent, 2 members of Little Fish are just setting up for a stripped down performance. It’s just guitar and organ today and I am a bit concerned this might not work in this format. Despite breaking her guitar and having to borrow one, the short set was nothing less than amazing. Juju and Ben work together brilliantly delivering amazing vocal performances with a lot of humour. When they play a sad song the singer Juju sounds very much like Patti Smith, which is a good thing in my book! They are playing in the merchandise tent again tomorrow. I can’t wait.

And here’s Sunday. Apparently I’m called Tim:

The time has come to see Little Fish again, this time they are playing the tiny merchandise tent. Unfortunately their technical problems continue and this time their keyboard breaks down completely. Not even an impromptu service by Tim can save the day. They struggle on though with tim playing a borrowed harmonica. Juju (Julia) is so relaxed about the whole thing it feels like she is playing to a group of mates and delivers one strong performance after another. Many artists would have cracked over the problems they have been having this weekend but it only makes Little Fish more fun to watch.

It’s a great review for us, but David Thorpe also managed to see almost every band that played! Check out his reviews of all three days and Jo Cox’s Truck photos to immerse yourself in the full Truck experience…

Leaping onto one of the most popular stages of her hometown came Julia Sophie (aka Juju) clad in full on winter gear- woolly hat and scarf included! The Little Fish singer, with a voice resonant of Patti Smith / Joplin launched into ‘Darling Dear’, her first UK single, with raw energy and enthusiasm. After heating up in this sweaty display, Juju cast off the scarf and hat and continued to rock around the stage like a more infinitely attractive and younger version of Angus Young!
